CWRE In The PLC Curriculum

Careers Education

The Pembrokeshire Learning Centre is delighted to have achieved Stage 1 in the Careers Wales Quality Award Pilot in 2024, the first school in Pembrokeshire to have achieved this. The award has been created to align with the Curriculum for Wales. It will support schools to create high quality careers and work-related experiences (CWRE).

The Careers Wales Quality Award aims to support all schools and settings with learners aged 3 to 16. It supports the development of purposeful and relevant CWRE across the curriculum.

The CWQA has 3 stages, each with a different focus.

Stage 1 is about Leadership. This stage is about formulating and maintaining the commitment to lead the development of CWRE.

The criteria are:

  • The school has made a formal commitment to gaining stage 1 of the Careers Wales Quality Award (CWQA) and has created an action plan / checklist for achieving it
  • The school has a vision and strategy for CWRE set out in a specific CWRE policy
  • The school has a plan for the regular monitoring, review and evaluation of CWRE to support continuous development and the contribution of CWRE to overall school improvement
  • The school has identified the roles needed to facilitate effective development of CWRE
  • The school is committed to allocating sufficient resources for CWRE and ensuring that they are effectively deployed

Careers in the curriculum

Support for careers and work-related experiences (CWRE) in the Curriculum for Wales.

CWRE is one of five cross-cutting themes within the Curriculum for Wales for learners aged 3 to 16.

Effective CWRE consists of careers education embedded across the areas of learning which is supported by a range of work-related learning experiences.

CWRE enables learners to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in preparation for the challenges and opportunities of further learning and the world of work.

From the age of 3, CWRE should inspire learners to:

  • Develop an understanding of the purpose of work in life for themselves and society
  • Become increasingly aware of the range of opportunities available to them
  • Develop the attitudes and behaviours required to overcome barriers to employability, career management and lifelong learning
  • Explore opportunities through a variety of meaningful experiences in learning, work and entrepreneurship
  • Develop resilience and the ability to be adaptable in response to challenges, choices and responsibilities of work and life

In the PLC, we have put an emphasis on developing the CWRE curriculum in all of our centres.
